TSP..TRI SODIUM PROSPATE or something like that…its sold at most paint stores for cleaning before painting..it will clean up anything..

I agree with sissy, TSP is usually the best way to go. Use it until, it’s clean, then prime and paint the wood over again.
If there is some deep soot, still, then, use a sander, with the lightest grit, to sand it off. If the light grit, doesn’t work, use a heavier grit. Best to start of light, and work up, rather than heavy to light grit sandpapers.
