If you are having a two-storey house, you might have some ideas on how to utilize the available room under the stairs. One idea that you might come up with is to have a small toilet under the stairs, a toilet for any guest coming to your house. The idea is to keep the guest out of the personal toilet/bathroom used by your family member. Here are some quick thoughts over that idea;
Measure the height of the ceiling. To achieve a comfortable toilet, people must be able to stand tall inside. The ideal height is around 2 meters but as it is located under the stairs, you may not able to get the same level. In that case, use the lower part to store the toilet amenities; tissue, soap, towel, etc.
Mind the level of the floor. A toilet is considered to be a wet/ damp environment so the level of the floor should be managed in such an angle to let the water quickly drain. The usual inclination from one point to another is about 5 cm. Do not keep the floor flat and level instead as it will be difficult for the water to drain out.
Mind the circulation. The room under the stairs is usually small so you should pay more attention to the circulation system. Keep an opening for the toilet to let the air recycle. If it is not possible, install an exhaust fan to help venting out the air.
Keep it well lighted. As in any other room in your house, you should also include a lighting source for the toilet. This can be an electrical light and/ or natural lighting source such as an opening or tinted glass windows. Direct sunlight can be used to control the temperature of the toilet, making it to be not so damp.
Keep the main function only. Toilet under the stairs is small therefore you should not insist of having all the functions and amenities of a regular-size toilet/ bathroom. Keep the function to a bare minimum; water closet, a bidet, and soap-tissue dispenser – for an example.
